ARLINGTON, Texas ? A Dallas Cowboys defense that was already playing without free safety Gerald Sensabaugh (calf strain) suffered a big setback Sunday when strong safety Barry Church suffered a ruptured right Achilles? tendon in the team?s 16-10 win over Tampa Bay. Church will undergo surgery and miss the rest of the season.
The injury creates a challenging situation for the Cowboys because they don't know whether Sensabaugh will be back for next Monday's game against the Chicago Bears. The Cowboys used cornerback Brandon Carr at free safety on passing downs against the Buccaneers, with Mike Jenkins and rookie Morris Claiborne at cornerback and Orlando Scandrick in the slot.
That could be a personnel grouping they use the rest of the season. Look for third-year pro Danny McCray to start at strong safety on conventional downs, but coverage is not his strength.
Church, a third-year player and first-year starter, had six tackles this season.
