iPad Mini review roundup: slim shape, sharp lines, sub-par screen

The iPad Mini is a good-looking tablet, reviewers say. But the screen is less than impressive.?

By Matthew Shaer / October 31, 2012

The new iPad mini is shown next to a full sized model at an Apple event in San Jose, Calif., on Oct. 23, 2012. The iPad Mini goes on sale later this week.

On Friday, Apple will begin selling its long-awaited iPad Mini ? a pared-down, super-slim tablet with a 7.9-inch display and an A5 processor. The Mini starts at $329, for a 16GB Wi-Fi-only model; 4G LTE-capable versions are set to ship in early- to mid-November. Reviews of the new Apple tablet begin to leak out today. So what kind of device is the iPad Mini, exactly??

Well, let's start with the obvious: The size. As Harry McCracken of Time notes, the Mini is 0.28 inches thick and weighs just 0.68 pounds.

"That?s not just a drastic reduction from the large iPad, which weighs more than twice as much, it?s also trimmer than Apple?s smaller-screen competition," McCracken writes. "One of the persistent gripes I hear from iPad skeptics is that the existing models are too big and bulky to hold comfortably; if there were an industry award for Tablet You Can Most Easily Envision Holding for Extended Periods of Time, the Mini would be a runaway winner."

Shane Richmond of The Telegraph, in the UK, agrees, calling the Mini "the best looking tablet computer anyone has designed."

Ever!

"There are plenty of people who care nothing for how a gadget looks. The specificationists are more interested in processor cores, USB ports and whether they can root their operating system. That's fine," Richmond writes. "They'll be unmoved by the sleek metal back and the chamfored edges of the iPad mini. Nevertheless, this is a device that looks and feels great."?

Of course, there is such a thing as too thin, writes Joshua Topolsky of The Verge.?

"I actually had a little trouble holding onto the device when I wasn't using the Smart Cover due to the back being as smooth as it is, and the frame being so thin. Maybe it's just my big hands, but I wanted a little more to grab onto. In that regard, I prefer the feel of the Nexus 7," he notes. "That problem was exacerbated by how wide the device feels in your hand, as well as the lack of a significant bezel around the left and right of the screen in portrait."

Text, don't call, once Sandy hits, say carriers

4 hrs.

Wireless carriers have made extensive preparations to deal with the impact of Hurricane Sandy, and are asking customers to do the same. Among the best things you can do to help keep your phone battery going and to ease network congestion is to limit your voice calls???keep them short???and to send text messages instead.

"Limit non-emergency calls to save battery power and free up wireless networks for emergency workers and operations and send brief text messages instead," Verizon Wireless says in a hurricane preparedness statement. "When the network gets busy, texts have a higher chance of getting through the first time and can be more efficient."

Among other tips offered by Verizon, AT&T,?Sprint and T-Mobile:

  • Keep phones and phone accessories???batteries and chargers???in sealed plastic bags?to avoid water damage.
  • If you have an extra phone battery and you?have power, charge that battery so it's ready.
  • Add to your phone's contact list all key emergency phone numbers and email addresses, including police,?fire and rescue agencies; schools and service people.
  • If you are being evacuated, forward home or work phone calls to your wireless number.
  • Use your phone's camera to take photos or video of your property and valuables before the storm hits, so you have "before" photos if your home suffers storm damage.
  • If cell service is down in your area, but your home Wi-Fi network is working, switch to Wi-Fi on your phone.
  • Expect high-call volume, which can lead to network congestion. If that's the case, you'll hear "fast busy" signals on your wireless phone (or a slow dial tone on your landline phone). If that?happens, hang up, wait several seconds and then try the call again. That allows your original call data to clear the network before you try again.

For additional tips on conserving your cellphone's battery, see NBC News' Bob Sullivan's Facebook page here. He says:?

How to conserve cell phone power during the storm: a nice set of tips. 1) Airplane mode 2) Turn off cell, wifi to gadget isn't searching for networks til you need them. Added to this, I have my auto jump-start battery in the house, which has a convenient USB port, too. Yours might at least have a cigaretter lighter 12V out ...?use a car charger or converter with that. HT to @steverubel

In advance of Sandy, all carriers have been deploying portable cell sites and mobile emergency generators?in the mid-Atlantic and Northeast?that can replace damaged cell towers. Carriers?are also coordinating their work with local and emergency agencies.

You can read more about your carrier here: Verizon Wireless, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile.

Better loan performance sees ICBC profit rise 14.9pc | South China ...

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China (ICBC), the world's largest bank by assets, has posted a forecast-beating 14.9 per cent rise in third-quarter earnings.

The gains came from higher profit margins on its loans and a reduction in its provisions for bad loans.

ICBC was the third of the big four mainland banks to report better-than-expected profits, joining Bank of China and Agricultural Bank of China. The fourth, China Construction Bank, reported third-quarter profit growth in line with market estimates.

"Larger lenders in the mainland are better weathering the impact of cuts in interest rates and interest-rate liberalisation," said Chen Xingyu, an analyst with Phillip Securities in Shanghai. Chen said the strong results showed the monopoly position of the big four meant they could get better returns on loans, which ensured growth in net interest margins.

The net interest margin is the spread between what a bank earns from lending and its cost of funds.

The mainland's fifth-largest lender, Bank of Communications, reported an 11.7 per cent rise in third-quarter earnings to 13.43 billion yuan from a year ago.

Earnings at ICBC were 62.44 billion yuan in the three months to September, up from 54.36 billion yuan a year ago and exceeding the 60.7 billion yuan average estimate of 12 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

Net interest income rose 15.9 per cent to 107.31 billion yuan, boosted by an increase in interest-generating assets and an increase in its net interest margin. Total loans at the end of September were 10.9 per cent higher than the 8.64 trillion yuan at the end of last year.

The net interest margin was 2.7 per cent at the end of June this year.

Bad-loan provisions for the three-month period amounted to 5.7 1 billion yuan, a drop of 33.8 per cent from last year.

Chen said the decline was mainly due to a slowdown in loan growth and a better-than-expected credit environment.

"Looking forward, net interest income and bad-loan provisions will be the key to the bank's profit growth," he added.

The bank said it had 74.75 billion yuan of non-performing loans, a decrease of 373 million from the end of June. The non-performing loan ratio was 0.87 per cent, 0.07 percentage points lower than at the end of last year.

Bank of Communications' third-quarter earnings growth was also driven by net interest income, which went up 14 per cent from the year-earlier quarter to 30.71 billion yuan. The bank's net interest margin remained flat at 2.6 per cent at the end of September as the interest rate cuts by the People's Bank of China hindered growth, the bank said.

The bank's non-performing loan ratio at the end of September was 0.87 per cent, an increase of 0.01 percentage points from the beginning of the year. The bank made a provision of 3.33 billion yuan in the third quarter, a decrease of 6 per cent from a year ago.

In addition, the mainland's first privately owned lender, Minsheng Banking Corp, said its third-quarter profit rose 30.7 per cent to 9.76 billion yuan from a year ago.

Nexus 4 vs. iPhone 5 - spec shoot-out

Android Central

We've lined up the Samsung Nexus 10 with the latest and greatest tablets out there, but how does the LG Nexus 4 compare to its competition? Of course we line up the Nexus 4 against other big-name Android devices, like the Samsung Galaxy S3 and HTC One X, but the iPhone 5 is probably the more interesting comparison. Windows Phone fans can also see how their Nokia Lumia 920 shapes up, and BlackBerry? Well... We'll have to wait until early next year to find out.

The Nexus 4 beats out the iPhone 5 in screen resolution, and only at a slight cost to pixel density. On local storage, the iPhone 5 has a bit of a lead; neither support microSD, and Apple's offering additional 32 GB and 64 Gb denominations. The iPhone 5 also takes the lead in cellular connectivity thanks to LTE. The iPhone 5 is slimmer, lighter, and has a smaller overall footprint, though the LG Nexus 4 has a significantly bigger battery, plus that cool inductive charging technology and NFC.

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is certainly looking nice, though we'll have to reserve judgment until we really get our hands on it. On paper, the LG Nexus 4 has an uphill battle, but we all know that phones are more than a spec sheet. How all of the device's disparate parts come together will be what really counts, and we'll be finding out .

Is anyone sold on the Nexus 4? What should LG and Google have included that is noticeably absent? How does it shape up against the other Android smartphones out there?

Intel ships SSD 335 as its first drive with 20nm flash, asks just a little to stay cutting-edge

Intel SSD 335

Don't panic, SSD 330 owners: your drive hasn't been immediately rendered obsolete. Intel's new SSD 335 is just the first shipping drive using the company's 20-nanometer flash memory. The shrink down from 25nm is primarily a technological showcase that proves the more scalable, hi-K/metal gate borrowed from processors can fly in NAND-based storage. Buyers will still get the same 500MB/s read speeds and 450MB/s writes in a 2.5-inch, SATA 6Gbps drive that will stuff neatly into many desktops and laptops. Intel is shy about pricing for the lone 240GB variant on offer, although a quick scan finds it selling for a slight premium over its ancestor, at $210. While that's still frugal in this day and age, we're guessing that Intel's vow to "pass along the savings" with the SSD 335 won't truly be realized without a reseller price drop or two.

As Sandy Hits, Washington Courts and Agencies?Except Supreme ...

Supreme_court_sandy_storm_1(2)
At the U.S. Supreme Court, justice is blind. It was also apparently immune to fears that swept the East Coast over the weekend about the potentially devastating Hurricane Sandy.

The high court remained open this morning for arguments, even as the rest of the District of Columbia, including the federal government, and much of the region shut down in anticipation of the storm. Hurricane Sandy - which intensified overnight, according to the National Weather Service - is expected to hit the east coast today with heavy rain and strong winds.

Arguments at a packed Supreme Court began on time at 10 a.m., with all justices in attendance. Chief Justice John Roberts Jr. made no reference to the storm brewing outside. The court announced today that arguments scheduled for tomorrow would be postponed to November 1, however.

Aside from the Supreme Court, the city?s other courts, federal and local, were closed. The District of Columbia Superior Court completely shut down, meaning anyone arrested and awaiting arraignment will be held by police until the court reopens. Court spokeswoman Leah Gurowitz said that a full shutdown is rare, with the last time being the ?Snowmageddon? in February 2010. A judge is on-call for emergency situations, she said.

The federal courthouse in downtown Washington was closed, with proceedings before the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Columbia and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the D.C. Circuit postponed. A U.S. District Court magistrate judge will be available to handle emergencies, according to a court representative.

The courts? closure meant other agencies were off the hook. With lawyers no longer needed to handle arraignments in Superior Court, the local U.S. attorney?s office was closed, according to spokesman William Miller. The city?s Office of the Attorney General also closed. A U.S. Department of Justice spokesperson was not immediately available for comment today, but the department sent a notice this morning canceling several events in New York and Washington.

The electronic filing system is still operational for the District?s federal court, but case processing, such as assigning new cases a number and a judge, will have to wait until the clerk?s office reopens, a court representative said.

Hurricane Sandy is expected to cause flooding, wind-damage and widespread power outages. President Barack Obama declared a state of emergency yesterday in the District, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.

The District of Columbia government closed today, with the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority suspending all rail and bus service until further notice.

With the general election just over a week away, a spokesperson for the Federal Election Commission could not be reached this morning to comment on how the closure might affect preparations. President Barack Obama returned to Washington this morning from the campaign trail to monitor the storm, and, according to The Washington Post, Republican nominee Mitt Romney is monitoring the storm as well but is continuing with scheduled campaign events.

Representatives of other federal regulatory agencies, including the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, could not be reached for comment on how the storm closures would affect operations.

OmniVision unveils 5MP BSI sensor that takes low light cameras further into the entry level

OmniVision unveils 5MP sensor that takes low light photography to the entry level It's almost a truism that starter smartphones have poor cameras that struggle just to get pristine photos in broad daylight, let alone dim interiors. Thankfully, OmniVision's new OV5645 sensor could lead newcomers out of a very literal darkness. The 5-megapixel imager includes backside illumination, support for 1080p30 (or 720p60) video and its own internal autofocus system, but no dedicated JPEG compression engine -- in short, a lot of the low-light performance of more sophisticated smartphones without the usual attached costs. Its cost-cutting even extends to front cameras, as a forward-facing sensor can share resources with the back camera to scale back on redundant hardware. We're looking forward to when mass production starts in the first quarter of 2013; we might not have to excuse our photo quality for a long, long time afterwards.

In All Probability The Residents Will Complaint If They Aren't Well-treated.

Posted by Editor on Oct 28, 2012 in Medicaid

The data below is restricted to Medicaid planning in Florida and is passing and general in nature. This info shouldn't been taken as legal services or Medicaid Planning directions. ICP Medicaid is a Federally sponsored programme which each State may administer differently. For that reason, Medicaid rules change from 1 state To another. Dining Room The dining room is where a great amount of movement happens when put next to other activities that happen in a stipulated home. This sort of care home furniture is typified by being extremely manoeuvrable, with the absolute minimum of widths being used so that folks can be set before their dining tables easily. There are numerous special devices that are in the world of nursing or residential care center furniture that may be invested in to make the dining process as simple as practicable for resident and carer alike.

There are several firms supplying the special retirement home furniture and apparatus needed to make such an establishment function efficiently and smoothly. This is part of the staff?s job, to guarantee all of the residents are safe and well sorted, that all their wishes are being met. If the old folks placed in the retirement home by their family, they're expecting they're going to get all the care wanted to help them stay healthy and satisfied. This includes monitoring liquid intake, because it's so crucial. This is also a situation that must be watched closely and if the nursing staff doesn't correct their behaviour, they have to be held accountable for not providing correct care. Staffing can be different at various times of the day, and on weekends. Ask if the inadequacies noted have been corrected. ? Don't be scared to pose questions. Figure out if the care home is Medicare / Medicaid certificated, if there's a list, and what their visiting policies are.

To make these programs successful, there are particular systems that we should focus upon. Potential care home residents should be concerned in the decision making process if feasible. Most likely the residents will complaint if they're not well-treated. First, a practical quality guarantee system should be established. Apart from making improvements to the regulatory standards, the care home authorities should tighten up their enforcement also. Next, if you're privy to the nursing home?s trend, you'll find out the most urgent problem is inadequate of manpower.

Paramount's grand reopening celebrates recovery from flood ...

VIDEO: The Paramount bounces back after 2008?s devastation

Jim Hoffman is hoping he can ?take a massive deep breath? on Nov. 4.

The driving force behind the Paramount Theatre?s $35 million renovation is a bundle of energy and enthusiasm as he sits on the edge of a new and wider deep-red seat that features a historically accurate scrollwork pattern on the backs and cushions designed to ?wear like iron.?

Audience amenities topped the list of priorities in bringing the historic hall back from near-death in June 2008, when 34 feet of floodwaters filled the building, rising through the subbasement and basement, sending 8 to 10 feet of fetid waters coursing through the main floor auditorium and Hall of Mirrors, smashing the Mighty Wurlitzer?s console onto the stage.

That is history.

?Now I?m holding my breath and tying up the loose ends,? said Hoffman, a retired Alliant Energy executive who led the theater?s $7.8 million renovation in 2002-03, ?only to watch it all wash down the river? five years later.

This time, he is chairman of the five-member stakeholder committee, a volunteer citizen group appointed by the City Council to seek advice and make decisions on behalf of the city, which owns the building.

The front doors opened Friday with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, but the countdown continues for next Saturday?s sold-out gala, featuring two really big stage stars: musician/actor Harry Connick Jr. and the city?s cultural crown jewel building, restored to its 1928 splendor.

THEN AND NOW: The Paramount marquee

HISTORICAL TOUCHES

The ?wows? started rolling in even before the paint was dry. Hoffman expects them to keep rolling in as more and more people enter 123 Third Ave. SE, in the heart of downtown Cedar Rapids.

The lily has been gilded with sparkling gold leaf throughout the Hall of Mirrors and historically accurate touches, from the upper balcony?s dome to the lower level lounges.

?Everything from 16 feet on the main floor, all the way down, was completely torn out, and ultimately recreated,? said Jason Anderson, the Paramount?s general manager. ?It?s a very, very cool process.? One that required a legion of designers, consultants, construction workers, technicians and artisans skilled in painstaking historic renovation techniques.

?In the remediation, every single inch of the building was touched. That certainly didn?t occur in the ?76 renovation or in the 2004 renovation,? added Tammy Koolbeck, vice president of VenuWorks for Cedar Rapids, the group that manages the Paramount for the city.

THEN AND NOW: Hall of Mirrors

CONNICK EXCITED

That?s music to the ears of superstar Connick, a champion of flood recovery in his hometown of New Orleans. He can?t wait to see the Paramount renovations, mark the building?s rebirth and help restore the arts to such a historic venue.

?Now, more than ever, those places are becoming the only types of home that celebrates live performance,? Connick said by phone last week. ?Hopefully, there will always be a place in the hearts of people to go and see and hear live performers of all genres of art.

?Those old halls, that?s Americana,? he said. ?They were built that way for a reason. Those old halls have a great sound and a great energy when you go in there. It?s important to keep them going.?)

As the waters receded, the future of the building lay in question. Was the structure sound enough to save? Was it time to ditch the old building ? designed as a movie palace ? for a state-of-the-art concert hall, miles away from any river?

?Everybody in the city knew that?s not the route that they should go,? Anderson said. ?There was a lot of that talk with a lot of the downtown buildings that got flooded out ? maybe it would be cheaper and easier to demo it all and rebuild ? I don?t think anybody really got past the ?No, we have to bring this back.??

THEN AND NOW: Main auditorium

THE FUNDING FACTOR

Money was a major player.

?Once everybody finally figured out that the FEMA money ? which is a huge portion of what?s restoring this theater ? only went with the building because it?s a National Historic Register property, everybody sort of just said, ?Oh,? ? Hoffman said with a laugh. ?Because if we had lost 22 and a half-million dollars in FEMA funding, I don?t know where the money would have come from, if we did want to relocate it.

?From my perspective, I never supported that in the first place,? Hoffman said. ?I really felt that this thing should come back. What I?m so excited about now is to show it to the community, because we absolutely made the right decision. There?s no question in my mind. And you notice that the second you walk into the Hall of Mirrors.?

A ?wow factor? can be purchased anew ? but not the memories even an epic surge can?t wash away.

?So many people have said to me, ?My first time in the Paramount, I was 6 years old,? or ?I had my first date? or ?I had my first kiss in the balcony.?

?That?s the other reason why it was so important to bring this back, because it?s such an icon for the members of this community, that I?m particularly proud that it?s coming back the way it is,? Hoffman said.

?They?re gonna come in here and I guarantee their first word is gonna be ?Wow,? because it really is ?Wow.??

THEN AND NOW: Ceiling details

MIX OF OLD, NEW

Even though many of the interior pieces are original, including the welcoming chandeliers, everything looks newer and brighter and more resplendent cosmetically.

The ?old? surrounds a plethora of 21st century technical upgrades, especially targeting the sound system and acoustics, as well as a deeper stage, a larger orchestra pit and a backstage that extends into the alley.

All of these improvements will not only benefit Orchestra Iowa, the venue?s primary tenant, but other local groups using the auditorium ? and national touring performers.

No more scenery left in semis in the alley. No more Anna from ?The King and I? having to change her hoop skirts in the alley in November, because her costumes would only fit through the back loading dock door. No more dead spots of muddied sound for the audiences. No more cramming elbows and knees into main floor and loge seats designed for smaller bodies nearly a century ago.

Robert Massey, CEO for Orchestra Iowa, which is returning to its home base after four years on the road, calls the restoration?s physical aspects ?monumental in scope.?

?You are going to enjoy going to the Paramount Theatre more than you did in the past,? Massey said. ?Being an audience development guy, that is just so critical to the vitality of the theater ? not just the orchestra, but the arts and culture in Cedar Rapids altogether.?

From the orchestra?s standpoint, he says they?re all happy to see some of the big wish-list items put in place, from ?drastic improvements? to the acoustics in the hall to an orchestra pit that will accommodate 52 players.

?We?re now able to have a really viable, vibrant venue for ballet and opera, that we never had before,? he said.

SLIDESHOW: A tour of the Paramount

NEW OPPORTUNITIES

A new partnership between VenuWorks and Orchestra Iowa allows them seek and bring in high-profile acts, instead of waiting for promoters to seek out ? or bypass ? Cedar Rapids.

An aggressive, diverse lineup is already filling up the building?s calendar, with everything from Orchestra Iowa, the Oak Ridge Boys, Bill Cosby and Jim Brickman?s Christmas show to Broadway touring shows, Cedar Rapids Opera Theatre?s production of ?La Boheme? in January, Kaplan University?s graduation and ?The Nutcracker? and ?Cinderella? ballets with Ballet Quad Cities.

Because of that wide range of performing styles and ticket prices, Massey isn?t worried about flooding the local entertainment market.

?I think it?s great that we offer a lot of choices and a lot of diversity,? Massey said.

?The Paramount Theatre is an entertainment destination in Eastern Iowa. It is that cultural patriarch of performing arts venues. It has a rich history and significance. You walk in the doors and you?re immediately transformed into the arts experience. You don?t get that at other theaters.

?When they were saying, ?Oh we could build a $50 million performing arts center over on the west side for you,? it won?t be the same. We don?t need another Gallagher-Bluedorn. We don?t need another Hancher (beyond the one planned). Those are very fine 21st century performing arts venues. You can?t replace the Paramount. They don?t build those anymore. I say that, but they just kind of did,? he says with a laugh.

?The craftsmanship ? when you look at the floors, you look at the terrazzo, the hand-plastered molding on the walls, you?re experiencing the core of humanity. ?

?The Paramount is a great center for our community,? he said, ?because it will be where people will gather, it will be where people come together.?

Massey, who came to Cedar Rapids just days before the flood, has never attended a concert in the venerable venue, but he?s been involved in the recovery process every step of the way.

CHALLENGES AHEAD

?My mantra the last four years ? we have a great respect for the historic integrity and the stories of the past, but I think our opportunity really lies in the future. I?ve never seen the Paramount as what it was. I?ve only seen the Paramount for what it can be. And even though the restoration is coming to a close and we?re about to play our first notes in there, I still have that same philosophy. What can it be? What can we do?

?Now the burden is on us as a community, on us as arts presenters, as musicians. We?re going to bring the art to the stage. What art will we bring? How will we transform audiences?

?And the bigger challenge to the community is, OK, we?ve built this. You have to come. The community wanted this back,? he said.

?My daughter is in second grade. She?s going to be going to Youth Concerts there, she?ll be singing and dancing on the stage. What will her Paramount be??

Determing your career path | Times of Zambia

By SYCORAX TIYESA NDHLOVU -

ome people have wondered why they are where they are and not where they are supposed to be in their careers. Some people have also wondered why they have not achieved what they wanted to be in their life.

And they have asked: What determines success or failure in one?s life?

Some people think that they are what they are because their family or their parents were be witched.

Some people think that their being out of employment, or in a poor low-paying job or their economic status general is because of ?vaku banthu?.

Some people have also wondered why their marriages are in such in shambles when others are singing ?hallelujah! Amen with joy in their marriages its all because of choices.

But before we consider what affects one?s success or failure in life, let?s learn from one of our readers? feedback about how this column is being perceived by our readers.

Sammy Siame, Kitwe says from the time he started reading Let?s Talk Careers articles; especially the topic Turn Your Success Light On which appeared in this column, his perception of life has completely changed.

Mr Siame says his mindset has changed to positive thinking; and he says these articles will contribute to changing his life for the better.

He promised to continue reading these articles in order to improve his life. Mr Siame has also asked this author and Times of Zambia to continue writing such articles which are helpful; especially for youths.

Every human being is always faced with two things in most situations. These are either a good or bad; either a right or wrong things. And God-The Creator, is so democratic that He doesn?t force anyone to choose what God wants for that person. God can advise you what to choose. But in most cases, because of the number and size of our sins one has, one ignores God?s guidance; and chooses what one feel s is good or right.

So, why is it that some of our friends we had at school in the same class are well-off than us? Why is it that some of our friends who we were with at school in the same class are struggling with economic hardships? It a question of choices one has been making up to date.

In every situation, there is a right and wrong decision that can be made. What do you always choose between right or wrong choice?

And J Martin Kone said the power that a person possesses is the power to choose. Now this power to choose which each one of us has can be used either for good or bad in our career, marriage or anything that we want to contribute to our success and happiness in life.

In short, from childhood, what have been your choices? Were they good or bad choices? Consider the choices you made at school. Reflect on what attitude you chose on certain subjects.

Remember how you reacted to parents? advice on that what you used to do when you were at school. Some people have had right choices in many situations while others have had bad or wrong choices.

Some people are in good jobs now because they made a right decision to study hard at school. Such people might be in a good jobs now because they turned down a low paying job; and made sure that they get the best one for their hard earned education.

Others might be in a poor job now or were fired a job they rushed for after turning down a good job which would have provided a good monthly salary and job security. Someone turned down marriage court-ship from someone rushing for someone else who is always giving him or her problems; or has actually divorced him or her now. Someone even divorced his or her spouse in preference for another one; but later regretted having done so as problems multiplied more than ever before. Someone divorced his or her spouse; and lived a happy marriage.

Your past decisions determine your present status. It is the average of good or bad choices that influence what you are today.

Of course, in some cases, some good decisions can overshadow some many wrong decisions and vice versa; but the point is that the more you make good or right decisions in most situations you make, the more the chances of success and happiness in your life.

The more good or right things you choose the more you are successful in life. The more bad or wrong things you have been choosing in your past, the more you haven?t achieved your dreams up to this stage.

Some people had an opportunity to get employment in a certain position in a certain firm or organisation where they would have had job security and job satisfaction; but they turned down such a job opportunity.

Now such people are regretting being in a poor and low paying job. Some of such people are completely out of employment after turning down a certain job from a certain organisation.

All such are situations where one makes a choice which later contributes to one?s success or failure. All such diverse examples of situations that demand making a choice have deliberately been applied in order to show you how choices we make can affect our progress in our career. Some marriage choices some people made affected their career development process.

Imagine a lady being married to a gentleman who doesn?t want her to be in any formal employment or in any business. Think of being married to someone who refuses to go with you where you have found the job really wanted.

Our past choices can affect our current and future situations. This is why it is important to make right decisions at the right time.

Some people are ?Kwalola Umwela? type. They decide on anything without considering the advantages and disadvantages of each choice.

Weigh the pros and cons of every situation. Careless decision-making process can lead you to misery while careful decision-making process can lead you to success in your career; and eventually in your life.

How best are you going to prioritise the use of economic resources to make sound progress in your career? Choices on where to spend your money influences your career and life success.

Clement Stone said you can steer the course you choose in the direction you want to be-today, tomorrow or in the distant time to come.

In every situation you face, pray to God to guide you to make a right decision. Decision-making process is a product of personal knowledge and experience gained in life.

Decision-making process is also a product of what your good and wise parents, relatives and friends give you. Decision ?making process is the ability to weigh what is right or wrong; or what is good or bad.

To make a wise decision in every situation, you must be a disciplined person. A disciplined person accepts wise guidance and advice from parents. A disciplined person associates with good friends.

Thus, choosing good friends is also part of right choice that leads you to success not only in your career but also in your life.

A disciplined person knows how to use his or her time on what adds value to his or her life. Don?t be indecisive in every situation. Develop principles which will guide you to assess what is good and what is bad.

Dr John C Maxwell said life is a matter of choices, and every choice you make makes you. Therefore, you might have been making good choices in the past; and that you are happy with your career development process so far.

That?s good. Keep it up! But if you reflect very well, you might discover that you would have done much better than where you are now. This is food for thought because there is always room to improve. So continue making better choices. Look for even better choices than ever before.

If you have not been making good choices in the past, it is not too late. Repent your sins that prevent you from making good and sustainable choices. Pray hard to God that when He guides you on which choice to make in a given situation, you will be able to know that this guidance is coming from God-The Almighty; and not from the Devil whose choice might look colourful to the eyes and minds of the wicked; makes one to regret shortly after that choice.

Therefore, don?t be surprised with what you are today. Don?t blame anyone for what you are. Your parents, brothers and sisters or anyone close to you, is not to be blamed for any negative situation you might be in. If anything, you should thank them for contributing to at least where you are through their advice and support of any kind.

Generally, you are a product of your own choices. You reap what you sow. Therefore, from now on-wards, make better choices for your better career and success in your life.

Colorado coffin races put the 'fun' in funeral

1 day

Take one morbid historical story and a town noted for celebrating the stranger side of life and what do you get?

If the town is Manitou Springs, Colo., you get the Emma Crawford Memorial Coffin Races, a madcap and macabre annual event set to take place on Oct. 27 this year.

Rolling coffins made up to look like hot rods, baby carriages and the Popemobile? Check. Coffin-pushing competitors outfitted as ghouls, pirates and zombie transvestite nurses? Check. Add in a parade of tricked-out hearses and you?ve got an event that draws up to 15,000 spectators a year and earns the title as our Weird Festival of the Month.

?It?s fun, it?s quirky; people love the themes and costumes,? said Floyd O?Neil of the Manitou Springs Chamber of Commerce. ?You have to experience it to understand it.?

It may also help if you understand the genesis of the event. As the story goes, the original Emma Crawford moved to Manitou Springs in 1889 as a young woman, hoping the town?s mineral springs and mountain air might alleviate her tuberculosis. Alas, it wasn?t meant to be and when she died two years later, she was laid to rest on nearby Red Mountain, presumably for eternity.

Alas, that wasn?t meant to be either. In 1929, after one ill-fated move and decades of storms, Emma?s coffin apparently became dislodged and took off down the mountain, ending up as a jumble of bones and casket hardware in the canyon below.

Fast-forward to 1994 when a group of chamber officials found themselves discussing how to boost tourism during the slow, post-summer season. ?The story had been known for a long time,? said O?Neil, ?and they said, ?Hey, Emma came racing down the mountain. Why don?t we have a race in her honor???

These days, the event gets rolling with a parade in which competitors show off their creations, flanked by entourages of local citizens in outfits inspired by Emma, the apocalypse and every horror movie you?ve ever seen. There may not be any flower-bedecked floats but there will be hearses ? black ones, white ones, ones outfitted with wings and guns ? driven by members of the Denver Hearse Association.

The real action, though, takes place after the parade when pairs of coffin-racing teams line up side-by-side on Manitou Avenue. Each team requires one ?Emma? who must remain prone and up to four pushers who do their best to wheel her ? or him ? along the 195-yard course faster than the competition.

The result is a serial spectacle of costumed characters ? goth girls and ghostbusters, blue-skinned Smurfs and dead celebrities ? careening down the street, hell-bent for trophies, bragging rights and $50 in scrip they can spend in local stores.

?You just see the quirkiest things,? said competitor Marlene Bizub, a frequent ?Emma? who works as both a psychotherapist and owner of the Ghouls Gulch Haunted House in nearby Colorado Springs when she?s not racing coffins.

According to Bizub, whose team has won Best Coffin and Best Entourage in previous parades, the key to the race is to build an aerodynamic coffin, ensure your ?Emma? remains prone to further reduce wind resistance and remember that ultimately it?s all in good fun.

Or is it? Even though she willingly shares tips with would-be competitors, one suspects Bizub may also be engaging in a bit of pre-race reverse psychology.

?We came in fourth in the race last year,? she told NBC News, ?so we?re out to win it this year and get that trophy.?

Shot Pakistani girl recovering fast in UK: father

BIRMINGHAM, England (Reuters) - The father of a Pakistani girl shot in the head by the Taliban for advocating girls' education said on Friday she would "rise again" to pursue her dreams after hospital treatment.

Malala Yousufzai, 15, was flown from Pakistan to Britain for specialist treatment after the October 9 attack, which drew widespread international condemnation.

The father Ziauddin Yousufzai and other family members arrived in Britain on Thursday to help her recovery.

"They wanted to kill her. But she fell temporarily. She will rise again. She will stand again," he told reporters, his voice breaking with emotion.

Malala has become a powerful symbol of resistance to the Taliban's efforts to deny women education. Public fury in Pakistan over her shooting has put pressure on the military to mount an offensive against the radical Islamist group.

"When she fell, Pakistan stood ... this is a turning point," her father said. "(In) Pakistan for the first time ... all political parties, the government, the children, the elders, they were crying and praying to God."

The Taliban have said they attacked her because she spoke out against the group and praised U.S. President Barack Obama.

A cheerful schoolgirl who wants to become a politician, Malala Yousufzai began speaking out against the Pakistani Taliban when she was 11, around the time when the government had effectively ceded control of the Swat Valley to the militants.

She has been in critical condition since gunmen shot her in the head and neck as she left school in Swat, northwest of Islamabad.

She could be at risk of further attack if she went back to Pakistan, where Taliban insurgents have issued more death threats against her and her father since she was shot.

"It's a miracle for us," her father said. "She was in a very bad condition ... She is improving with encouraging speed."

British doctors say Malala has every chance of making a good recovery at the special hospital unit, expert in dealing with complex trauma cases. It has treated hundreds of soldiers wounded in Afghanistan.

Dave Rosser, the hospital's medical director, said she would be strong enough to travel back to Pakistan in a few months' time but it was unclear whether the family would choose to do so.

"She's certainly showing every intention of keeping up with her studies," Rosser added.

Malala's father said he and his family cried when they were finally reunited with her on Thursday.

"I love her and of course last night when we met her there were tears in our eyes and they were out of happiness," he said, adding that Malala had asked him to bring school textbooks from Pakistan so she could study.

"She told me on the phone, please bring me my books of Class 9 and I will attempt my examination," he said.

"We are very happy ... I pray for her."

Emanuel Steward, famed boxing trainer, dies at 68

DETROIT?? Emanuel Steward, earnest yet easygoing, proved rough and tough wasn?t the only way to win in boxing.

With a twinkle in his eyes, a smile on his face and a soothing voice, Steward developed unique bonds in and out of the ring with a long line of champions that included Thomas Hearns, Lennox Lewis, Oscar De La Hoya and Wladimir Klitschko.Steward, owner of the Kronk Gym in Detroit and an International Boxing Hall of Fame trainer, died Thursday. He was 68. His executive assistant, Victoria Kirton, said Steward died Thursday at a Chicago hospital. She didn?t disclose the cause of death.

"It is not often that a person in any line of work gets a chance to work with a legend, well I was privileged enough to work with one for almost a decade," Klitschko said Thursday. "I will miss our time together. The long talks about boxing, the world, and life itself. Most of all I will miss our friendship."

Steward, whose father was a coal miner and mother was a seamstress, was born in West Virginia. He got boxing gloves as a Christmas present at the age of 8, the start of what would become a long career in the sweet science.

He moved to the Motor City just before becoming a teenager and trained as an amateur boxer at Brewster Recreation Center, which once was the home gym of Joe Louis.

Steward, at the age of 18, won the national Golden Gloves tournament as a bantamweight. Instead of trying to make it as a professional boxer, he went to work for the Detroit Edison Co. and in 1971 accepted a part-time position as head coach ? for $35 per week ? of the boxing program at the Kronk Recreation Center.

A dynasty was born.

The Kronk?s first professional champion was Hilmer Kenty, a lightweight from Columbus, Ohio, who started training there in 1978 and won the WBA title two years later.

But It was Hearns who really put Kronk ? and the trainer known as Manny ? on the map. The boxer known as Hitman was the first man to win titles in four divisions ? he won five overall ? and topped his 155-8 amateur record by going 61-5-1 with 48 knockouts as a pro.

Even though Steward had a lot of success with Hearns, some of his setbacks from his corner were among the most memorable in the sport. Hearns was knocked out in the 14th round by Sugar Ray Leonard in 1981 ? Steward said that was the most painful experience of his life ? and Hearns was on the short end of a three-round fight with Marvin Hagler in 1985 that is considered one of the best bouts in boxing history.

"He brought the very, very best out of me," Hearns once said of Steward.

Hearns wasn?t alone.

Steward trained, helped train or managed some of the greatest fighters ? and some kids who just needed to get off the streets ? of the past 40 years out of Kronk and in other facilities across the globe, putting fighters from many countries in red and gold trunks.

"Lennox used to say when fighting as an amateur that everyone was afraid of the Kronk guys," Steward once said. "He saw the respect when they saw the colors."

The gym for years was seen as a way to keep kids out of trouble in southwestern Detroit.

"A lot of these kids would be in the streets," Steward once said. "They live for this."

And, Steward lived for it, too.

He loved boxing ? and boxers ? but like the Motor City, the gym he adored fell on hard times.

The city closed the original Kronk Recreation Center ? a hot, sweaty basement gym ? after vandals stole its copper piping in 2006. It was allowed to remain open, but it put Steward in a difficult financial situation and he later rented space at a gym in Dearborn so his young fighters could train.

"With the loss of Emanuel Steward, we have lost a true Detroit icon," Detroit Mayor Dave Bing said. "Emanuel Steward embodied our city?s toughness, our competitive spirit, and our determination to always answer the bell.

"We are grateful for Emanuel Steward?s many contributions to our city and his impact on generations of young people."

In the early years at Kronk, most of his fighters were black. In recent years, his melting pot of boxers included a Ukrainian heavyweight, an Irish middleweight and scores of young men from Eastern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East.

Steward was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1996.

"It brings me great grief and sadness to hear of the passing of one of the best and most respected trainers of this era," De La Hoya said. "I learned a lot from him during our professional relationship and I will be forever grateful for his help during that time. We were also friends and I know I am going to miss him as so many others will, too. He was an important part of our boxing community."

Steward worked closely with Lewis during his title run, and with current heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko as recently as July when the boxer led 22,000 fans in singing "Happy Birthday," to the beloved trainer.

Klitschko had to train recently without Steward for his fight against Mariusz Wach next month in Germany

"His spirit is always here," Klitschko said. "I can hear his voice in sparring while doing things, whispering in my ear. As the famous saying goes, ?The show must go on,? and that?s exactly the case."

Steward also trained actor Wesley Snipes for his role as a boxer in "Undisputed" and appeared briefly with Lewis in "Ocean?s Eleven

Steward worked since 2001 as a boxing analyst for HBO, sharing his rich knowledge of the sport and warm personality with a younger generation of fans.

"Manny was a respected colleague who taught us so much not only about the sweet science but also about friendship and loyalty," HBO Sports President Ken Hershman said. "His energy, enthusiasm and bright smile were a constant presence. Ten bells do not seem enough to mourn his passing."

HBO Sports commentator Jim Lampley ? a friend of Steward?s since the early 1980s and broadcast partner for more than a decade ? said Steward?s wisdom and common touch made him special.

"He was the most loyal, generous, positive spirited, broadly accepting man I?ve ever known," Lampley said. "He had a positive impact on everyone he encountered."

Daily Kos: Targeting Latino Voters in Campaign Communications ...

New approaches that seek to explain the cause of low Hispanic turnout and political participation focus on mobilization efforts targeted toward Hispanic voters. Research indicates that campaigns spend less time contacting Hispanic households than they do contacting African-Americans and non-Hispanic whites. According to the 2004?American National Election Studies?only 16 percent of Hispanics were contacted by political campaigns in that election cycle as opposed to 26 percent of blacks and 49 percent of whites. Moreover, the dominant language spoken inside Hispanic households is another potential explanation for low political participation among Hispanics. 2009 American Community Survey data shows that?35 million Americans?5 years of age and older spoke Spanish at home and close to half of these people did not speak English ?very well?. Only 28 percent of respondents to the?2006 Latino National Survey?said they could carry on a conversation ?very? or ?pretty? well in English.

Spanish language advertising has proven particularly effective to Hispanics who primarily speak Spanish or who struggle to carry out a conversation in English. Alternately, Hispanics who are highly incorporated into the political and social fabric of the United States and whose cultural connection to their native heritage is weaker than recent arrivals of Hispanic families, may be less responsive to appeals in Spanish and more receptive to political messages in English.?Minimal research in political science has examined how the language of political communication affects one?s political behavior.

However, Two recent studies examine the impact of language in political communication to Hispanic voters. Don Green and I analyzed whether Spanish-language radio can be used to increase Hispanic voter turnout. In?our experimental study, we ran nonpartisan 60-second, radio spots in 206 uncompetitive congressional districts close to the November 2006 midterm elections in order to reach voters typically ignored by political campaigns. The message urged voters to vote and provided some basic information about the congressional races, including the names of the candidates. These ads were aired in Spanish on radio stations that reached a wide Spanish-speaking audience during peak drive times.

Since 1980, Spanish language radio has exploded in popularity. Only television is a larger source for news among Hispanics, according to the?2004 Pew Hispanic Media Study. With a wide and consistent audience, Spanish language radio is a ripe venue for political campaigns to mobilize voters. Yet, radio?s impact on the political behavior of Hispanic voters has received scant attention.

The results of our field experiment imply that 100 gross ratings points (GRPs) of radio advertising increases Hispanic turnout by 4.3 percentage points on average. It seems nonpartisan radio ads urging Latinos to vote can effectively raise levels of participation. Given the cost efficiencies of mass media advertising, the cost effectiveness of radio advertising compares favorably to other forms of outreach, including grassroots tactics like door-to-door canvassing, direct mail and volunteer phone calls. But because the language of the appeals was not varied, the question of whether English language appeals effectively mobilize Hispanic voters remained open.

With UCSD?s Marisa Abrajano, I explored this question more directly in a?second field experiment?conducted in New York City?s 21st?City Council District during the February 2009 special election. Special elections tend to be low turnout affairs that draw few competing political messages making such an environment ideal to study the effects of political communication produced by the language in which they are communicated.

The experiment established two randomly selected treatment groups that received postcard mailings shortly before the election. One group received a nonpartisan mailing in Spanish encouraging them to vote. The other mailer was exactly the same but in English, and the rest of the sample was randomly assigned to the control group and did not receive any mailing.

Those in the English language treatment group experienced a 2.2 percent increase in turnout on average compared to the 1.0 percentage point average increase for those in the Spanish language treatment group. Simply put, the study found more evidence that the English language mailer was more effective in mobilizing participants than the Spanish language mailer. This finding is of critical importance to campaigns because it suggests that they ought to reassess strategies that appeal to Hispanics entirely in Spanish. Spanish language appeals may be effective in stimulating electoral participation among Spanish-speaking Hispanics, but they are not necessarily more effective than messages delivered for English-speaking Hispanics.
