4 ways to summon your purpose in life - Business Management Daily

Some lucky people seem to have been born with a greater purpose in life while the rest of us are left to search for ours.

Umair Haque, director of Havas Media Labs, thinks the problem may be that we?re looking so hard. Instead, he suggests four ways we can approach the world.

  1. Ditch the cool facade and feel the love. Instead of feeling and expressing real love, we use weaker substitutes such as ?passion,? ?dreams? or ?bucket lists.? These days, we?re more likely to feel the opposite of love?hate, anger, fear and envy?but purpose is a form of love, real love.
  2. Feel the pain of heartbreak. Part of our modern-day cool facade involves insulating ourselves against everything that could cause an emotional ache or pain. To open yourself back up to feeling, you need to immerse yourself in some things that make you ache and maybe break your heart.
  3. Drive through life NASCAR style. Most people approach life like a Formula One race, trying to drive the cleanest laps to achieve the fastest time. People who find true purpose and fulfillment, though, take a NASCAR approach, where hits and scrapes are part of the experience. You have to be willing to take hits, fail, start over and keep going.
  4. Seek forests, not fireworks. Fireworks are exciting, but they just spark, flare and fizzle in a matter of seconds. Purpose and the love it takes to achieve it come from a calmer, slower process akin to the growth of a great forest. As you go through that life, you will be bruised, scarred and hurt, but if you?re lucky, purpose will find you and redeem you from the void of an empty and unfulfilling life.

Multi-tasking whales sing while feeding, not just breeding

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Humpback whales are famed for their songs, most often heard in breeding season when males are competing to mate with females. In recent years, however, reports of whale songs occurring outside traditional breeding grounds have become more common. A new study may help explain why.

Humpbacks sing for their supper -- or at least, they sing while they hunt for it.

The research, published December 19 in PLoS ONE, uncovers the whales' little-understood acoustic behavior while foraging.

It also reveals a previously unknown behavioral flexibility on their part that allows the endangered marine mammals to balance their need to feed continuously with the competing need to exhibit mating behaviors such as song displays.

"They need to feed. They need to breed. So essentially, they multi-task," said study co-author Ari S. Friedlaender, research scientist at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment. "This suggests the widely held behavioral dichotomy of breeding-versus-feeding for this species is too simplistic."

Researchers from the U.S. Naval Postgraduate School, the University of California-Santa Barbara and Duke tracked 10 humpback whales in coastal waters along the Western Antarctic Peninsula in May and June 2010. The peninsula's bays and fjords are important late-season feeding grounds where humpbacks feast on krill each austral autumn before migrating to warm-water calving grounds thousands of miles away.

Using non-invasive multi-sensor tags that attach to the whales with suction cups, the researchers recorded the whales' underwater movements and vocalizations as they foraged.

All 10 of the tags picked up the sounds of background songs, and in two cases, they recorded intense and continuous whale singing with a level of organization and structure approaching that of a typical breeding-ground mating display. The song bouts sometimes lasted close to an hour and in one case occurred even while sensors indicated the whale, or a close companion, was diving and lunging for food.

Humpbacks sing most frequently during breeding season, but are known to sing on other occasions too, such as while escorting mother-calf pairs along migratory routes. Though the reasons they sing are still not thoroughly understood, one distinction is clear: Songs sung in breeding grounds are quite different in duration, phrase type and theme structure from those heard at other locations and times.

"The fact that we heard mating displays being sung in late-season foraging grounds off the coast of Antarctica suggests humpback whale behavior may be more closely tied to the time of year than to physical locations. This may signify an ability to engage in breeding activities outside their traditional warm-water breeding grounds," said Douglas P. Nowacek, Repass-Rogers University Associate Professor of Conservation Technology at Duke's Nicholas School.

As the region's climate warms, sea ice cover around the Western Antarctic Peninsula has thinned in recent years and the water stays open later in the foraging season, he explained. Whales are remaining there longer into austral autumn to feast on krill instead of heading off to warm-water breeding grounds, as many scientists previously believed.

"Mating may now be taking place at higher latitudes," Nowacek said. "This merits further study."

Alison K. Stimpert, research associate in oceanography at the Naval Postgraduate School, was lead author of the new study. Lindsey E. Peavey, a PhD Student at the University of California at Santa Barbara's Bren School of Environmental Science and Management, co-authored it with Stimpert, Friedlaender and Nowacek.

Your Health And A Golf Course Houston TX Has ? Recreation & Sports

Where there is a golf course Houston TX has offer, you will find hundreds of participants daily. There are lots of people who enjoy playing the sport for a number of reasons. It is considered a hobby to most. Others find it relaxing and a great way to spend some leisure time. Aside from these reasons to play, is the health benefits you receive.

When you hear people talk about this sport, the first thing that probably comes to mind is boredom. Having watched golf on television, you mostly see a bunch of people along the course, low talking, being quiet, and giving the occasional cheer after a golfer takes a swing. However, in addition to being a leisurely way to kill time, the sport has a number of other benefits.

Many years ago, experts had a theory about effective exercising. They believed sustaining an elevated heart rate for a minimum of 20 minutes would be an effective means of staying fit. If the workout was less than this time, it was seen as an ineffective exercise. It was later discovered that a steady medium paced exercise could be beneficial as well.

Most people who play golf will tell you they do so because it is fun and relaxing. Some people will even admit to becoming addicted to the sport, and play it frequently because they love it so much. In fact, studies have shown that golf can actually affect your emotional, physical, and mental state in a positive way.

This game can bring a lot of fun and excitement for its players. The open spaces and the challenge of the game is enough to make anyone feel better. Players find fulfillment in playing with friends and enjoying the outdoors, and the company of other players on the course. All of these things factor into them improving their emotional state.

Some people may not be aware of this, but golf can be a very physically demanding game. Most pro golfers have to stay in great condition in order to play well. Each and every shot require a certain level of strength and coordination. You also have to have good endurance and balance as you play. Swing your club, carrying your bags, and walking the course all play a part in helping you maintain your health.

In order to perform well at this, and any other sport, requires a certain level of physical and mental strength. All players know that the must be mentally aware of what they are doing in order to have a good game. Every shot you take requires that you be aware of your body, the ball, and your target. This level of concentration and focus takes a lot of skill and practice.

It doesn?t always take joining a gym to get in shape. If you are looking to becoming more active think about playing on a golf course Houston TX has available. You are likely to find the sport very relaxing and a great way to spend your time. Your health has the potential to improve every time you play.

Jumpjet Netflix Of Private Jet Travel - Business Insider

First class air travelers who want to upgrade to private jets without the extra cost have an option in a newly launched startup.

Jumpjet founder Will Ashcroft describes his company as a "private travel club," with price points matching that of first class travel on large airlines.

On top of comfort, according to Ashcroft, the great advantages private jets offer are convenience and time savings. Flying in a private jet offers an average time savings of three hours, he said.

That's because there's no TSA security process. Jumpjet flies mostly out of small airports, so clients often can be delivered by car directly to their plane. It is recommended they arrive a mere 15 minutes before takeoff.

Membership packages cover different distances and numbers of flights. For $2,350 per month, Upper Club members get 10 round trips per year on flights as long as three hours 15 minutes (from New York City, that's about as far as Aspen).

Upper Club Plus covers flights of four hours 15 minutes; ten round trips per year cost $3,995 per month. The Coast to Coast Elite package provides ten round trips across the country for $5,500 per month.

Unfortunately for frugal customers, there is no way to take a flight outside the boundaries of one's membership package. An Upper Club member will have to upgrade to Coast to Coast Elite for any flight from New York to California.

In Upper Club and Upper Club Plus, a member can bring seven guests per trip, but Coast to Coast Elite members can only bring three. Personal memberships can be "shared," so the member himself does not need to be the one to take the trip.

Businesses work with Jumpjet to create their own membership deals, based on their flying needs.

So far, Jumpjet has signed up nearly 700 customers, 90 percent of whom are individuals. The businesses that make up the remaining 10 percent vary from large corporations to accounting and law firms, Ashcroft said.

Jumpjet launched in October and expects to have planes in the air early next year. To start, it will offer service to 40 cities and charter the aircraft.

Jumpjet

Among Jumpjet's fleet will be Dassault Falcons.

Asked about challenges facing Jumpjet, Ashcroft mentioned the "too good to be true factor." It can be hard to convince potential customers that the startup can really offer dependable service, he said.

The secret is software that creates plane itineraries based on where its passengers want to go.

The fact that reservations should be made two weeks in advance gives Jumpjet some time to figure out how to move its clients efficiently.

Ashcroft says Jumpjet has no direct competitors, but examples of similar businesses shine light on the difficulties of what it is trying to do.

DayJet provided on-demand jet travel and suspended operations in September 2008, less than a year after it went into business.

SurfAir offers "all-you-can-fly access" to members, but only in California, greatly simplifying flight planning.

If Jumpjet can get its members where they need to go efficiently and profitably, it could change the airline industry. If not, it will go the way of DayJet.

4 Reasons to Avoid Fast Cash Payday Loans - Debt Consolidation ...

2. Do not opt in for overdraft protection on debit card purchases and ATM withdrawals. Once you opt out, there is no fee if your debit card purchase or ATM withdrawal is denied because of lack of funds.

3. Avoid loans that promise to improve your credit score or come with onerous fees or terms you don't understand. Many factors influence your credit score, and taking out subprime loans can actually hurt your score. Never pay an advance fee to get credit.

4. Seek alternatives to using payday lenders, including social service and faith-based organizations. If you're on Social Security, you might be eligible for help with food, rent, mortgage payments, energy bills or cash assistance that you don't have to repay. To get help with improving your credit and finding alternatives to payday lenders, meet with a reputable nonprofit credit-counseling agency that is a member of the National Foundation for Credit Counseling (NFCC). To find one, contact the NFCC at 800-388-2227 or nfcc.org.

Writing Updates | Housewife Class

For one thing, I want to apologize for all the random ?Something happened in Emily World!? notifications on the app.? For some reason it has stopped giving notifications if it is a picture-only post, and started giving notifications even if I have scheduled something for a future posting.? For example, blogs on the book of Jeremiah will start posting in January, but as I have finished them and scheduled them for posting, notifications are popping up even though nothing really has happened in Emily World.

Except a lot has happened in Emily World!

For one, an update to the app.? Check for that in case it makes a difference as we try to get it fixed.? And speaking of the app, check out the new fancy-schmancy badge they gave me on the top of my blog!? So fun!? When you click on it, it takes you straight to this app in the app store.? I love it!

But we are also still working on some things.? If you go to this website on a tablet or iPad, the layout is fixed again but still has the strange blue background at the top with the tiny icon.? Weird.? Allegedly, they are working on that.? Still.? A year later.?? So technical difficulties are part of the learning process, even if not one of the more romantic aspects.

Mostly I like to write, for writing?s sake.

And I am writing lots, even if my blog has been mostly pictures lately.

A whole lot of fun things are about to be published, and as they come out I will post links so you can see!? Hopefully some of it will be helpful to someone.? As part of my writing for Deseret Digital (which includes Deseret News, a Utah newspaper, and Mormon Times, a faith-based newspaper ? both of them online and in print), I have recently been contributing to a new website called ?FamilyHow?.? This website is great because it is not long-winded and nerdy Emily-ness, but quick and short answers in practical and direct ways.? I think you will love it!?? Any of these things that are published I will get to share links to on the blog, so you can pick and choose if any sound interesting or fun to check out ? whether to see my writing, or maybe to learn something.

There is more exciting news to share later, and thank you for your patience with technical difficulties and encouragement to write, write, write!

qrCode Things about Emily: "I'm a Mormon." I am a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. I love my family. I love my friends. I got bilateral cochlear implants in 2010. I will always love sign language. I choose books over television, and organics over processed. Nothing is as close to flying as ballroom dancing - except maybe running, when in the solo mood. I would rather be outside than anywhere else, especially at the river riding my bike or kayaking. I enjoy taking pictures. I have two ugly puppies. I have my PhD, but that is mostly nerdy-boring... except that I love my job! Resting days are lost in gardens and books. The best thing about Emily World is that it's always an adventure, even if (not so) grammatically precise. The only thing better than writing is being married to a writer. Nathan Christensen and I were married in the Oklahoma City temple on 13 October 2012. Nathan writes musical theater, including "Broadcast" (a musical history of the radio) and an adaption of Lois Lowry's "The Giver". He served his mission in South Korea, has taught song-writing in New York City public schools, and worked as a theater critic for a Tucson newspaper. His hip and cool day job includes writing copy for UncommonGoods.com. This is not an official Web site of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Final campaign reports: 2012 election nears record

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Final campaign finance tallies trickled out Thursday for a presidential race expected to be the most expensive in modern U.S. political history, showing last-minute contributions worth $33 million to political action committees backing Republican candidate Mitt Romney from a billionaire Las Vegas casino magnate and his wife who've been the election's biggest money couple.

The late-campaign donations from Sheldon Adelson and his wife, Miriam ? $23 million to the Karl Rove-backed American Crossroads and $10 million to the Restore Our Future "super" PAC ? raised the couple's total contributions for the 2012 election cycle to about $95 million, all for Republicans.

The new campaign finance filings to the Federal Election Commission were among records covering the final few weeks of the race, when campaign organizations for Romney and President Barack Obama, along with a slew of super PACs, raised and spent millions toward an expected $2 billion campaign.

By late October, both campaigns already neared $1 billion in expenditures, and super PACs supporting Obama and Romney had spent more than $500 million in media ads. Politically oriented nonprofit "social welfare" organizations that do not have to declare their finances or identify their fundraisers have spent hundreds of millions more on so-called issue ads.

Adelson, who owns casinos in Las Vegas, Singapore and the Chinese territory of Macau, has been the top donor in the 2012 race. He has provided more than $54 million supporting Romney and other GOP presidential candidates and an additional $18 million for other Republicans.

The latest $33 million in donations from the Adelsons are detailed in campaign reports due to the FEC by midnight Thursday.

Adelson vowed early on in the presidential race that his political donations would top $100 million by the November election. His postelection super PAC total does not match that figure, but the casino magnate also hinted he would also give millions more to GOP-leaning nonprofits that do not have to report their war chests to the FEC but instead provide confidential figures to the Internal Revenue Service.

Along with his dominant presence in the presidential race, Adelson also poured money into super PACs backing several GOP Senate candidates in the final weeks of the election. More than $1.5 million in Adelson money went to a super PAC backing GOP candidate George Allen in Virginia, $1 million to a committee aiding Michigan candidate Peter Hoekstra and $500,000 to a super PAC supporting Sen. Scott Brown. All were defeated.

Other top last-minute donors to the pro-Romney Restore committee included Larry Ellison, head of software giant Oracle Corp., who gave $3 million, and Houston Texans owner Robert McNair, who gave $1 million. The Renco Group, a New York company headed by investor Ira Rennert, also gave $1 million.

Adelson recently told The Wall Street Journal that he would double his $100 investment in GOP causes by the next election and he has the financial muscle to do it. His massive campaign donations are backed by his lucrative casino holdings in the U.S. and Macau. The most recent November quarterly statement of his Las Vegas Sands Corp. estimated that Adelson's casino revenues surged $1.11 billion in the first nine months of 2012 compared with the same period in 2011.

In late November, Adelson's company announced a special dividend of $2.75 a share in anticipation of the threatened "fiscal cliff" rise in federal tax rates. The dividend move netted Adelson ? who owns more than half of Sands' 820 million shares ? an estimated personal gain of as much as $1.2 billion, according to financial analysts.

Adelson's role as the premiere fundraiser in American politics could be complicated by his casino company's continuing struggles with the federal government over tax revenues and Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission investigations focusing on possible violations of the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act, which targets money-laundering and international bribery.

Sands' recent quarterly statement acknowledged the federal probes as well as negotiations with the IRS over "unrecognized tax benefits" highlighted by a tax audit of the company's Macao and Singapore casino earnings between 2005 and 2009.

Sands cited a "possible settlement of matters presently under consideration at appeals in connection with the IRS audit."

White House prepping Plan B is debt talks fail

White House press secretary Jay Carney (Charles Dharapak/AP)President Barack Obama's budget office is preparing for the possibility that "fiscal cliff" talks will fail, triggering painful automatic cuts to domestic and defense programs that he and his Republican foes officially want to avoid. White House spokesman Jay Carney described the planning as an abundance of caution, not pessimism about the seemingly stalled negotiations.

The White House's Office of Management and Budget this week "issued a request to federal agencies" for information needed to finalize calculations on the spending cuts required under what is technically known as "sequestration," Carney told reporters at his daily briefing. OMB is "acting responsibly," he added.

"The administration remains focused on reaching agreement, as we've been discussing, on a balanced deficit-reduction plan that avoids sequestration" he said. "This action should not be read?as a change in the administration's commitment to reach an agreement and avoid sequestration."Leaders of both parties have pledged to work together in the coming weeks and we are confident, as I just said, that we can reach an agreement. However, with less than one month left before a potential sequestration order would have to be issued, the Office of Management and Budget must take certain steps to ensure the administration is ready to issue such an order should Congress fail to act."

Carney's comments came as talks on the fiscal cliff?a series of tax hikes and government spending cuts that could plunge the economy into a new recession?seemed to be making no headway. Obama and Congressional Republicans have each put a proposal on the table but do not appear to be actively involved in negotiating a compromise.

The birth of new cardiac cells: Where new heart cells come from

ScienceDaily (Dec. 5, 2012) ? Recent research has shown that there are new cells that develop in the heart, but how these cardiac cells are born and how frequently they are generated remains unclear. In new research from Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH), researchers use a novel method to identify these new heart cells and describe their origins.

This research is published in Nature on December 5, 2012.

A sophisticated imaging system (MIMS) demonstrates cell division in the adult mammalian heart.

"The question about how often cardiac cells are born has been extremely difficult to answer because there was a need for new techniques to help us understand this process. We are especially excited about our findings because of the novel way in which were able to show new heart cells, using Multi-isotope Imaging Mass Spectrometry (MIMS). Our collaborator, Claude Lechene, MD, had developed this technology, and as a team we harnessed this for the cardiac regeneration question." said Richard T. Lee, MD, a physician and researcher in the Cardiovascular Division at BWH and senior author of the paper. "These data present one piece of the puzzle when it comes to the discussion around the generation of new cardiac cells."

The team of BWH researchers marked existing cardiac cells genetically to cause them to express a green fluorescent protein. Then they used Multi-isotope Imaging Mass Spectrometry (MIMS) to examine the development of new heart muscle cells, called cardiomyocytes, in a pre clinical model over a period of months. Researchers were surprised to find that new heart muscle cells primarily arose from existing heart muscle cells, rather than stem cells. Even in the setting of a heart attack, when stem cells are thought to be activated, most new heart cells were born from pre-existing heart cells.

"Our data show that adult cardiomyocytes are primarily responsible for the generation of new cardiomyocytes and that as we age, we lose some capacity to form new heart cells," said Dr. Lee. "This means that we are losing our potential to rebuild the heart in the latter half of life, just when most heart disease hits us. If we can unravel why this occurs, we may be able to unleash some heart regeneration potential."

Evernote launches enterprise version. But do employees want to ...

Baby_elephantLast week we wrote about how CEO Phil Libin is financially structuring Evernote to build a company for the next 100 years. He?s arranging investments now in the hopes he?ll have an IPO in 2015 or later that goes slightly better than the tech IPOs we?ve seen in the last 12 months.

But while financial engineering, wise valuations, and bringing in shareholders with a long term view are all important, there?s a little matter of actually building a huge business. Libin is busy on that one as well. Enter Evernote?s announcement today from Le Web that it?s launching a new enterprise product. It was announced in August, but is finally launching today.

It might be tempting to view this as another bolt on ? like Evernote?s many product acquisitions of late? or merely part of the enterprise fad that?s sweeping tech. But this may be the product to watch if Libin is going to pull off all of the things he talks about.

Evernote?s consumer product? of which I?m a huge fan? is said to have a healthy conversion rate from free to premium. But few companies have become truly huge publicly traded entities based on that model. And we?ve heard from some people in the industry that Evernote?s conversion numbers are greatly helped by some advantageous deals with Asian carriers that bundle the service on phones. Whether these people stay paying customers remains to be seen.

The enterprise approach is a dramatically different way to get paying customers: By having to sell to them in groups. We?ve also heard that Dropbox is also examining how to build a more robust enterprise product. Both seem to have a little bit of Box.com envy.

Product-wise it makes sense. Like Dropbox, over two-thirds of Evernote?s users are already using it as a work productivity tool. The product would allow large organizations to leverage one another?s ?digital memories.? This puts it in the loose collaboration space that Atlassian, Salesforce via Chatter, Yammer, Asana and so many other modern enterprise companies touch from different directions.

The features seem well thought through, although sorting a company?s digital memories will need a pretty powerful UI.

One risk may be that Evernote runs into the same problems that salesforce automation software ran into early on: Salespeople didn?t want a company system to own their leads because that was the only leverage they had. So, too, might individuals not want companies to own their research, facts, contact lists or whatever it is they are storing. I?m not sure I?d want my publication to have all that if, you know, I didn?t own my publication.

The truth is Evernote helps me look smart. Look at this stat on Central Africa I just pulled off the top of my head! Or, Hey!?This is a great esoteric wine!?Maybe I don?t want to share the work version of that advantage with colleagues.

Fortunately the person who combatting that resistance better than anyone in the industry is a close friend, investor and mentor?s of Libin?s: Marc Benioff, co-founder and CEO of Salesforce.com.

5 More Things I Did to Get My Daughter's Natural Hair Growing ...

Recently, ?I wrote an article that literally set off a slew of comments good (and bad) from people questioning the methods I used to get my daughter?s hair growing. While I always appreciate the comments, there is one lesson I want other parents who are learning to deal with their daughter?s natural hair to learn, Natural Hair Nazis need to take a seat. Being natural is not a cult where you HAVE to abide by certain rules or else you get kicked out. Being natural simply means you do not put a relaxer in your hair. It?doesn?t?matter if you wear your hair in an afro, straight or curly- you are natural. I don?t prescribe to hair types or beliefs that one ingredient will ruin a product. Instead I experiment and use trial and error. It may not work for everyone, but it?s work for my daughter and myself.

I initially made the decision not to put chemicals in my daughter?s hair ?because I saw the damage they had did to my hair and I wanted her to love her hair- something I didn?t learn to do until adulthood. So while I knew the journey would be difficult, I was ready to take on the challenge. ?Her hair didn?t?miraculously?start growing overnight. ?But when I became consistent in my practices, her hair started to improve. There were times when I was told by people to ?just put a perm in it? but I knew that I wanted her to accept her hair in its natural state. ?In the end, going natural allowed her hair to be healthy?? but not without a lot of trial and error on my part.

To further help you guys who are struggling to get your daughter?s hair to grow, ?I?m going to summarize some natural hair strategies that took me 3 years to learn. While these are specific strategies you can start doing today, remember that everything will not work for everyone. Here goes:

1. Use Aloe Vera Juice in your hair routine.

Picture 1 of 5

I mix it into my daily conditioning spray, I put a cap full in out conditioner and sometimes I even drink it. Aloe vera juice is a natural hair detangler and ?conditioner. I personally buy an all natural brand ?and it makes her hair soft, and gives it shine. Click here for a detailed review of one I use.

In the end, learning to take care of natural hair is a process. What works for me may not work for you. ?But when you do your research, you can rest assured you will start to notice a change in moisture and length in your daughter?s hair.

Now my BMWK family, do you have anymore questions about natural hair and our daughters? ?What do you do to keep yours or your daughter?s hair moisturized?

Christians, liberals left out as Islamists back Egypt's draft constitution ...

Tens of thousands of protesters gathered in Tahrir Square Friday to denounce Egypt's President Mohamed Morsi and the draft constitution his Islamic allies approved earlier in the day.

By NBC News wire services

CAIRO -- Islamists approved a draft constitution for Egypt early Friday without the participation of liberal and Christian members, seeking to pre-empt a court ruling that could dissolve their panel with a rushed, marathon vote that further inflames the conflict between the opposition and President Mohammed Morsi.

The vote by the constituent assembly advanced a charter with an Islamist bent that rights experts say could give Muslim clerics oversight over legislation and bring restrictions on freedom of speech, women's rights and other liberties.

The draft, which the assembly plans to deliver to the president Saturday, must be put to a nationwide referendum within 30 days. Morsi said Thursday it will be held "soon."

'No place for dictatorship'
Morsi added that the decree halting court challenges to his decisions, which provoked protests and violence from Egyptians fearing a new dictator was emerging less than two years after they ousted Hosni Mubarak, was "for an exceptional stage."

"It will end as soon as the people vote on a constitution," he told state television on Thursday night. "There is no place for dictatorship."

The Islamist-dominated assembly that has been working on the constitution for months raced to pass it, voting article by article on the draft's more than 230 articles for more than 16 hours. The lack of inclusion was on display in the nationally televised gathering: Of the 85 members in attendance, there was not a single Christian and only four women, all Islamists. Many of the men wore beards, the hallmark of Muslim conservatives.

Eighteen days of popular protest culminated in the downfall of Egyptian president Hosni Mubarak on Feb. 11, 2011.

For weeks, liberal, secular and Christian members, already a minority on the 100-member panel, have been withdrawing to protest what they call the Islamists' hijacking of the process.

"This constitution represents the diversity of the Egyptian people. All Egyptians, male and female, will find themselves in this constitution," Essam el-Erian, a representative of the Muslim Brotherhood, declared to the assembly after the last articles were passed just after sunrise Friday.

ANALYSIS: Crisis tests Egyptians' constitution

"We will implement the work of this constitution to hold in high esteem God's law, which was only ink on paper before, and to protect freedoms that were not previously respected," he said.

The sudden rush to finish came as the latest twist in a week-long crisis pitting Brotherhood veteran Morsi and his Islamist supporters against a mostly secular and liberal opposition and the powerful judiciary. Voting had not been expected for another two months. But the assembly abruptly moved it up in order to pass the draft before Egypt's Supreme Constitutional Court rules on Sunday on whether to dissolve the panel.

"I am saddened to see this come out while Egypt is so divided," Egypt's top reform leader, Nobel Peace laureate Mohamed ElBaradei said, speaking on private Al-Nahar TV. But he predicted the document would not last long. "It will be part of political folklore and will go to the garbage bin of history."

President Mohammed Morsi recently granted himself unprecedented power, leaving many Egyptians furious. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin discusses Egypt unrest

A new opposition bloc led by ElBaradei and other liberals said the assembly had lost its legitimacy.

"It is trying to impose a constitution monopolized by one trend and is the furthest from national consensus, produced in a farcical way," the National Salvation Front said in a statement, read by Waheed Abdel-Meguid, one of the assembly members who withdrew.

Thursday's vote escalates the already bruising confrontation sparked last week when Morsi gave himself near absolute powers by neutralizing the judiciary, the last branch of the state not in his hands. Morsi banned the courts from dissolving the constitutional assembly or the upper house of parliament and from reviewing his own decisions.

In a sign of the divisions, protesters camped out in Cairo's Tahrir Square who were watching the interview chanted against Morsi and raised their shoes in the air in contempt.?

The president's edicts sparked a powerful backlash in one of the worst bouts of turmoil since last year's ouster of autocrat Hosni Mubarak. At least 200,000 people protested in Cairo's Tahrir square earlier this week demanding he rescind the edicts.

Street clashes have already erupted between the two camps in the past week, leaving at least two people dead and hundreds injured. And more violence is possible.

The opposition plans another large protest for Friday, and the Brotherhood has called a similar massive rally for the following day, though they decided to move it from Tahrir to avoid frictions. Bands of youths have been daily battling police on a road leading off the square and close to the U.S. Embassy.

Several hundred Egyptian protesters and police faced off again today in central Cairo. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Defiance
The Constitutional Court's announcement that it would rule on the legitimacy of the assembly was in direct defiance of Morsi's edicts. It will also rule Sunday on whether to dissolve the upper house of parliament, which is overwhelmingly held by Islamists. Most of the nation's judges are on indefinite strike to protest the edicts.

It is not clear what would happen to the approved draft if the court dissolves the assembly. The crisis could move out of the realm of legal questions and even more into the more volatile street, to be decided by which side can bring the most support.

The opposition is considering whether to call for a boycott of any referendum on the constitution or to try to rally a "no" vote, said Hamdeen Sabahi, a National Salvation Front leader who ran in this year's presidential race and came in a surprisingly strong third.

"The people should not be made to choose between a dictatorial declaration or a constitution that doesn't represent all the people," he told independent ONTV, referring to Morsi's decrees. "He is pushing Egypt to more division and confrontation."

During Thursday's session, assembly head Hossam al-Ghiryani doggedly pushed the members to finish. When one article received 16 objections, he pointed out that would require postponing the vote 48 hours under the body's rules. "Now I'm taking the vote again," he said, and all but four members dropped their objections. In the session's final hours, several new articles were hastily written up and added to resolve lingering issues.

"We will teach this constitution to our sons," al-Ghiryani told the gathering.

More Egypt coverage from NBC News

Islamist members of the panel defended the fast tracking. Hussein Ibrahim of the Brotherhood said the draft reflected six months of debate, including input from liberals before they withdrew.

"People want the constitution because they want stability. Go to villages, to poorer areas, people want stability," he said.

Over the past week, about 30 members have pulled out of the assembly, with mainly Islamists brought in to replace some. As a result, every article passed overwhelmingly.

Human Rights Watch Rights groups criticized the hurried manner in which the constituent assembly pushed the draft charter through, saying it not the right way to guarantee fundamental rights or the rule of law.

"Rushing through a draft while serious concerns about key rights protections remain unaddressed will create huge problems down the road that won't be easy to fix,"said Joe Stork, deputy Middle East and North Africa director for the New York-based group.

The draft largely reflects the conservative vision of the Islamists, with articles that rights activists, liberals and others fear will lead to restrictions on the rights of women and minorities and on civil liberties in general.

Egypt's president Mohamed Morsi, who had granted himself sweeping new powers that would have made all of his rulings immune to judicial review, is facing continued public outcry despite his decision to soften the decree by limiting those rulings to 'sovereign' matters. NBC's Ayman Mohyeldin reports.

'Morals and values'
One article that passed underlined that the state will protect "the true nature of the Egyptian family ... and promote its morals and values," phrasing that suggests the state could prevent anything deemed to undermine the family.

The draft says citizens are equal under the law but an article specifically establishing women's equality was dropped because of disputes over the phrasing.

As in past constitutions, the new draft said the "principles of Islamic law" will be the basis of law.

Previously, the term "principles" allowed wide leeway in interpreting Shariah. But in the draft, a separate new article is added that seeks to define "principles" by pointing to particular theological doctrines and their rules. That could give Islamists the tool for insisting on stricter implementation of rulings of Shariah.

Another new article states that Egypt's most respected Islamic institution, Al-Azhar, must be consulted on any matters related to Shariah, a measure critics fear will lead to oversight of legislation by clerics.

The draft also includes bans on "insulting or defaming all prophets and messengers" or even "insulting humans" ? broad language that analysts warned could be used to crack down on many forms of speech.

It also preserves much of military's immunity from parliamentary scrutiny, putting its budget in the hands of the National Defense Council, which includes the president, the heads of the two houses of parliament and top generals.

The final draft contains historic changes to Egypt's system of government. It limits to eight years the amount of time a president can serve, for example. Mubarak was in power for three decades. It also introduces a degree of oversight over the military establishment - though not enough for critics.

Ex-NBC chief Zucker takes the helm at CNN

5 hrs.

CNN on Thursday named former NBC Universal chief Jeff Zucker as its new top executive, searching for a way to turn around the original cable news network as it has lagged behind rivals Fox News Channel and MSNBC.?

Zucker will start in January. He will be based in New York and report to Phil Kent, who runs all of the Turner networks for parent company Time Warner.?

"I spent the most rewarding years of my career as a journalist, and it's where I look forward to spending many more," said Zucker, who shot to fame as the executive producer of NBC's "Today" show at the start of its morning dynasty in the 1990s.?

Zucker moved on to Hollywood as NBC's entertainment president. He became head of NBC Universal, and achieved great financial success for the company by overseeing its highly profitable cable networks.?

One of them was MSNBC, which has become more successful by appealing to a progressive audience. CNN has steadfastly maintained a more traditional approach and its biggest issue has been the same as it has been for two decades: how to get an audience to stay with the network when there is not a big news story dominating the public's attention.?

While a great deal of attention has been paid to CNN's problems in prime-time for its domestic network, Zucker will command a much larger and more successful portfolio, including HLN, CNN International and the CNN.com website. A CNN product is in televisions on some 265 million homes across the world.?

Zucker has been seen as the lead candidate for the job since his predecessor, Jim Walton, announced in the summer he was leaving. Zucker has spent the past year helping Katie Couric put her talk show on the air.?

"Jeff's experience as a news executive is unmatched for its breadth and success," Kent said. "He built and sustained the number-one brand in morning news, and under his watch NBC's signature news programming set a standard for quality and professionalism."?

The Associated Press contributed to this report.?
