Movie Reviews: A Good Day to Die Hard, Identity Thief, Safe Haven ...

Editor's Note: Some reviews and information aggregated from?Moviefone.

Save Haven?

Mark Glass, Patch blogger:?**??The quiet drama, based on a novel by Nicholas Sparks, plods along as its inevitable romance blossoms, with some helpful advice from her other new friend - an attractive neighbor (Cobie Smulders), who seems nearly as secretive about her own backstory as our leading lady on the lam. We like Hough?s character, and hope she?s not really the perp of the pursuit, but don?t discover the truth of why she landed there for longer than the plot requires. Expect more focus on finding love than solving crimes as the tale unfolds. The action eventually picks up for a rather farfetched climax, with a welcome little perk at the end. If you find the actors engaging and have the patience for director Lasse Hallstrom?s idea of pace, the rewards are there. Full Review

A Good Day to Die Hard

Mark Glass, Patch blogger:?** Or, more accurately, a good day to watch one of Bruce Willis? earlier?Die Hard?flicks rather than this one. John McClane - the Energizer Bunny of action heroes - learns his son (charisma-impaired Jai Courtney) is facing serious criminal charges in Russia. Even though the two have been estranged for years, John flies over to see what he can do. He stumbles into yet another episode of epic mayhem, as his son and another high-profile defendant are fleeing from the courtroom that?s just been bombed and overrun by thugs toting big guns.

Tossing another generation of McClanes into the franchise is no path to longevity. Perhaps the?Die Hard?series should just be mercifully allowed to expire on this loud, ludicrous death rattle of a film. Full Review

Identity Thief

Mark Glass, Patch blogger:?*?This lame-brained comedy might actually be funnier that this rating indicates, though wasting gifted actors like Jason Bateman and Melissa McCarthy calls for consequences. Identity theft is a serious problem. That doesn?t preclude milking laughs from a hyperbolized example, but the script has to serve the cast and concept far better than this one does.

Bateman plays a corporate financial drone with a lovely family and nice little life in Denver. McCarthy not only runs up huge bills and a DUI under his name in Florida, but does so just when he?s starting a great new job that will vanish within a week if he can?t clear the record first.

Jason heads to the Sunshine State, desperately hoping she?ll ?fess up to his boss and save his career. He discovers he?s been victimized by a woman who is part criminal and part kook.?

Despite his record of helming episodes of many worthy sitcoms, director Seth Gordon appears overmatched by the scale of a film production with multiple locations (including, alas, our own fair city). The movie is too long and too silly to work. McCarthy?s character is so ill-defined that when the action shifts to the script?s inevitable warm fuzzy bits, nothing resonates. Big disappointment.?Full Review

Side Effects

From the Arizona Republic: "Ultimately, think of the movie as a puzzle box in which all the pieces fit together wonderfully well. Once you step back and take a look at how it?s all put together, you have to marvel at how cleverly constructed the whole thing is."?Full Review

Video: Will the GOP delay Brennan?s nomination too?

>>> more now on the republican filibuster of chuck hagel 's nomination of secretary of defense. after republicans delayed the nomination for at least ten days citing concerns about benghazi and his personal finances , senator john mccain admitted the reason for the filibuster for some ultimately may be personal.

>> there's a lot of ill will towards senator hagel because when he was a republican, he attacked president bush mercilessly, was very anti-his own party and people. people don't forget that.

>> the president is standing firmly behind hagel . politico says he has, quote, gone all in on the nomination.

>> gentlemen, thank you so much for joining us.

>> thanks for having me.

>> absolutely. this is john mccain the maverick. he got the nickname "the maverick" not after "top gun" but because he stood up against his party . now he's saying when you go against the party , you may suffer ultimately years later as in the case of chuck hagel .

>> look, a lot of republicans , including mccain myself don't really consider hagel a republican anymore. it has a lot to do with the way he went after the iraq war back when iraq was the dominant issue in washington . remember, mccain was the chief proponent in the senate for the iraq war surge in 2007 and hagel was its biggest critic.

>> but manu, how do they not consider him a republican anymore when it was john mccain who was nearly booed off stage when he brought up um grags refor -- immigration reform . and thus he abandoned the notion of a comprehensive reform there. does he identify with chuck hagel ? both have seen the bitter pill they've had to swallow from their own party .

>> look, relationships matter a lot in the senate. this is a situation where a republican has really frayed relations with many members in his own party because of the stances he took in iraq and on other issues. remember, tamron, a lot of these republican senators who voted against him didn't serve with chuck hagel . it's a very new, younger republican conference. they really only know him from the anti- iraq positions that he took, as well as some of the other thing he's did, such as endorsing deb fisher's opponent.

>> to that point, roger, the senator was on msnbc earlier today. here what's he said. it has nothing to do with the personal issues laid out by senator mccain . let me play it.

>> this doesn't have anything to do with a grudge. this has something to do with picking the best person to be the leader of the largest defense organization in the world. he's not the right guy for dod. he's well to the left of the policies of the obama administration.

>> so, michael, the president says he's all in. earlier this week chuck hagel 's brother indicated he does not plan to withdraw his name. so where do you believe this will go?

>> you know, it's a great question. i think everything you've been airing is actually valid. i this it's true that republicans are angry with hagel partly because they feel like he sort of betrayed the party . it happens on both sides. when joe lieberman said some things the democrats didn't like, he wasn't exactly welcomed into his own party . it's not a way to make friends in washington . there's a certain amount of healthiness in people being willing to challenge their own party but it does tend to cost them. my guess if senator hagel continues to work hard on refining and correcting on what he said on iran policy, for example, where he did have some problems in his hearings and democrats admit that, too, if he spells out a bit more of his thinking on sequestration and what defense cuts he thinks would be acceptable and what cuts may be too far, he may have to stayin ga iengaged in the policy debate to get the few republicans he needs to get to 60 votes. i think it probably will ultimately work. you know, this is some real strong opposition, no doubt.

>> let me read a little bit of the "new york times" op-ed. it says "the most dishonest aspect of this debacle was that republicans denied they were filibustering, claiming they were wanting to prolong debate for a while and all major vote require 60 supporters. that of course is the very definition of the filibuster, now so routine republicans can no longer acknowledge what they're doing. your reaction to that, manu?

>> republicans are in a difficult position because they did oaf potion hagel for a number of reasons but they were worried about taking that position. ne know once you -- they know once you set a precedence, it can come back to bite you. they know they're not going to kill his nomination. it's difficult because they don't like hagel and they don't know exactly how far to go.

>> if he does get confirmed and goes ahead, is he a damaged secretary of defense?

>> i think the events that are happening in washington with sequestration looming are frankly so big, that whether he's damaged or not, whether he came in on a perfect tail wind or came in damaged, he's going to prove his mettle on how he handles the next few weeks. big are things will quickly take over because we had such big issues before us. the kind of things that will happen to the department of defense if sequestration occurs is so bigs how he manages that will trump what's happening now.

>> i appreciate you gentlemen joining me. thank you.

App-driven life: Making smart cars even smarter

Smart cars bring to mind fuel-efficiency, Japan, genius engineering -- but what about intelligence? Now car makers are getting in on the app game, providing drivers with a wealth of information behind the wheel.?

By Chris Gaylord / January 27, 2013

Smart cars don't just mean high fuel efficiency anymore. With the development of car-specific apps, drivers like Orquidania Tejada in Watertown, Mass. can get a wealth of information about nearby places and people.

Can your car use apps? High-end Lexus cars now come with digital dashboards. These car displays (about the size of a short but wide laptop screen placed just above the gearshift) offer built-in maps and directions. However, they really come to life once you connect the car to an iPhone, BlackBerry, or Android phone.

The Lexus Enform application ? which is free to download, but requires a Lexus to work ? uses the phone's data connection to pipe in music and restaurant reviews. Lexus teamed up with seven of the most popular online services to put a version of their mobile apps into the Enform app. There's MovieTickets.com (for showtimes), OpenTable (for restaurant reservations), Pandora and iHeartRadio (for music), Bing (for search), Yelp (for reviews), and Facebook Place (for posting your location to Facebook).

Lexus chose a good cross section of apps but incorporated fairly handicapped versions of each service. Since your phone is already in the car, you might as well just use the original, full-featured versions of these popular apps and not bother with Enform's $7 monthly fee.

Enform adds in voice controls for most of these apps, which is nice. Though one does wonder when a driver is supposed to be using these things, especially since several of the apps require someone to be looking at the screen.

49ers win NFC West with 27-13 victory over Arizona

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Bare-chested Joe Staley and Mike Iupati jumped up and down wearing only their shorts, each offensive lineman doing his best to will the Vikings to victory from afar.

The 49ers ? sporting fresh red NFC West champion caps after beating the Arizona Cardinals 27-13 on Sunday ? crammed into the cozy confines of their locker room and became Minnesota's fiercest cross-country cheering section. When Blair Walsh's 29-yard field goal sailed through the uprights for the Vikings as time expired to give San Francisco a playoff bye, the tiny dressing area in Candlestick Park's south corner erupted into a crazy, celebratory scene.

"C'mon, baby, bye week!" shouted defensive tackle Ricky Jean Francois.

The Vikings certainly deserved some thanks. So did Michael Crabtree.

Crabtree's career day and dazzling catch-making display sent San Francisco to a second straight division title and into the playoffs with some much-needed momentum.

Crabtree caught touchdown passes of 49 and 7 yards and finished with a career-high 172 yards on eight receptions, leading the 49ers to another rout of Arizona after a slow start.

Colin Kaepernick threw for a career-best 276 yards and two TDs as the Niners (11-4-1) did their part to control their postseason fate ? then waited all of about 15 minutes to watch Minnesota beat Green Bay and give San Francisco the NFC's No. 2 seed and a week off before hosting a divisional playoff game.

"It was a lot harder this time around to get it," said safety Donte Whitner, his new hat on backward. "We were the target this year and got everybody's best shot. To come out and still win our division and have the opportunity to get a first-round bye is tremendous."

Frank Gore ran for a 2-yard score early in the fourth quarter for his franchise-best 51st touchdown rushing, breaking a tie with mentor Roger Craig and late Hall of Famer Joe Perry.

With yet another new face under center, the Cardinals (5-11) lost for the 11th time in their last 12 games in what might have been Ken Whisenhunt's final game as coach. Brian Hoyer went 19 of 34 for 225 yards and a late TD toss in his first NFL start as Arizona's fourth quarterback this season.

He couldn't keep up with Crabtree and Kaepernick.

Crabtree's outstanding outing was the best by a 49ers receiver since Terrell Owens' 166-yard performance on Nov. 25, 2002, against Philadelphia.

"My dude made it happen," Crabtree said, looking at Kaepernick. "I'm really focused on these playoffs."

Crabtree caught a 31-yard pass to set up his team-leading eighth TD reception on the next play. The sequence put him over 1,000 yards, giving San Francisco its first 1,000-yard receiver since T.O. in 2003.

On the next series, Crabtree made a pretty, one-handed grab with his right hand along the left sideline on third-and-11 for a 19-yard gain and first down. He made a 14-yard catch on fourth down late in the third, and later converted another fourth down with a reception of 7 yards.

What a boost for an injury-depleted receiving corps missing Mario Manningham for the rest of the season because of a knee injury. Plus, tight end Vernon Davis was limited a week after sustaining a concussion.

Struggling San Francisco kicker David Akers missed wide left on a 44-yard field goal attempt midway through the second quarter, then did it again with nearly the same kick ? from 40 yards this time ? 24 seconds before halftime. Akers put his hands on his knees and closed his eyes in frustration as boos rained down from the sellout crowd at Candlestick Park.

He missed for the fourth time in his last eight spanning three games and 13th time in 40 tries after setting an NFL single-season record with 44 field goals in 52 attempts last year. Akers bounced back by nailing one from 43 yards early in the second half but was later clipped in his kicking foot by Arizona's Justin Bethel. Akers stayed in the game, then booted a 26-yard field goal with just more than 9 minutes remaining.

Coach Jim Harbaugh didn't rule out a change.

"We'll evaluate that," he said. "It's his job to make the kicks."

Hoyer exhibited poise in the early moments. He completed seven of his first 13 passes and three straight ? for 7, 15 and 12 yards ? during one drive as Arizona took a 3-0 lead on Jay Feely's 35-yard field goal late in the first quarter. Feely added a 31-yarder early in the second to make it 6-0.

The Cardinals outgained the 49ers 129-15 in the opening quarter and held San Francisco without a first down.

But that didn't last long.

The Cardinals ended a six-game stretch without a touchdown pass when Hoyer hit Michael Floyd on a late 37-yard score. Floyd had eight catches for 166 yards.

The Cardinals pounded the ball toward the right side of San Francisco's defensive line where Pro Bowler Justin Smith had been stout against the run all season before getting hurt two weeks ago. Now, San Francisco has an extra week for Smith to heal.

"Today's game kind of mirrored our season," Whisenhunt said. "I'm proud of the way our team's worked. You understand this is part of the business. We haven't won enough games this year."

Former starting quarterback Alex Smith made what could have been his final appearance in a 49ers uniform when he entered the game with 5:57 to go ? playing to chants of "Let's Go, Alex!" and "Alex! Alex!"

Notes: Cardinals Pro Bowl CB Patrick Peterson was lost to a left hamstring injury in the fourth quarter. RG Pat McQuistan was sidelined in the first with an ankle injury and didn't return, while LB Paris Lenon injured his left hand in the second half. ... 49ers LB Aldon Smith went without a sack for the third straight game, winding up with 19? ? three shy of Michael Strahan's single-season NFL record set in 2001 for the Giants.
